Book Review

Part One: The Cruelty of Lies

Zane is a high school senior with big dreams of becoming a professional baseball player. Baseball is more than just a hobby for him; it is his future, his passion, and his opportunity to earn a scholarship and build a better life.

His father, Graham, is a well-known and respected surgeon in the county. He has the kind of reputation that makes people look up to him. His wife, Eliza, lives a high-society lifestyle as a stay-at-home mother, and from the outside, their family appears to have everything.

However, behind closed doors, the family is living a completely different reality.

When winter break begins, Zane and Brit walk in on their father physically abusing their mother. Unable to stand by and watch, Zane steps between his parents to protect his mother. Instead of stopping, Graham turns his violence toward his own son, beating him so badly that he breaks Zane’s nose.

Rather than exposing the truth, the family covers up what happened. During their annual family vacation, they create a story that Zane is sick with the flu to explain his injuries.

But the abuse does not stop there.

After attending prom, Zane returns home just three minutes late. Graham uses this as another excuse to punish him, brutally beating him and breaking his arm. This time, the damage is especially devastating because Graham knows how much baseball means to his son. By breaking his arm, he destroys Zane’s opportunity to play baseball and pursue his scholarship.

Things become even worse when Graham and Eliza turn the situation around and tell the police that Zane is the aggressive one who has been hurting the family. Graham uses his professional reputation, influence, and power to make himself look innocent.

Brit is also beaten unconscious after calling the police for help.

Graham makes it clear to Zane that nobody will believe him because of the power and influence he has in the community.

Meanwhile, Emily tries to visit her niece and nephew at the hospital but is denied access.

The situation begins to change when Brit finally tells Detective Keller the truth: Graham, not Zane, is responsible for the violence and injuries.

Detective Keller begins questioning the sheriff’s actions, particularly whether anyone bothered to ask Zane questions before handcuffing him and taking him to jail.

Dave also obtains Zane’s journal, which contains detailed notes documenting everything that has happened over the previous six months. The journal becomes an important piece of evidence that helps reveal the truth behind the family’s carefully constructed lies.

This first part is heartbreaking because Zane loses so much. His childhood, his sense of security, his freedom, and ultimately his dream of becoming a professional baseball player are taken away by the very person who should have protected him.

Part Two: Homecoming – A New Beginning

Part Two introduces Darby, a woman who moves to town after the death of her mother. She is a landscaper looking for a fresh start and an opportunity to build something of her own.

Darby approaches Emily and offers to do the landscaping for her business for free. Her hope is that Emily will love the work and eventually allow her to handle the landscaping for all of her properties.

As Darby becomes more familiar with the community, she falls in love with the city. She eventually decides to put down roots by purchasing a home and a building for her landscaping business.

At the same time, Zane returns to his hometown.

After everything he endured, Zane has grown into a successful man. He purchases a building to establish his law firm and a home for himself. His return represents a new chapter in his life, one where he is no longer the helpless teenager who was controlled by his father.

Zane begins noticing Darby and becomes curious about her. During one of their interactions, he asks her what happened to her nose.

Darby reveals that her nose was broken by her husband.

This discovery introduces another layer of domestic violence into the story. Although Darby and Zane have different histories, they share something painful: both have experienced abuse at the hands of someone who was supposed to love them.

Their connection begins to develop, and the possibility of finding love after trauma becomes an important part of the story.

Part Three: From Roots to Blooming – The Past Comes Back

Just when things seem to be going well, Graham returns from prison believing he can once again control and intimidate his family.

Unfortunately for him, his plans begin to backfire.

Graham cannot stand seeing the people he believes have wronged him moving forward and enjoying their lives. He has a list of people he blames for his circumstances, and he is determined to make them pay.

His obsession with revenge leads him to throw a rock through Zane’s business window to lure Zane away from his home.

Graham then breaks into Zane’s house and attacks Darby.

However, Darby is no longer someone who is willing to sit back and allow someone to hurt her. She fights back and beats Graham badly.

Meanwhile, Darby’s business is thriving, and Zane’s law firm is also doing well. Both are building successful lives despite the painful experiences they have endured.

The story takes another tragic turn with Eliza’s death from a subdural hematoma.

Graham’s actions eventually catch up with him, and he is arrested and sent back to prison.

This section demonstrates how dangerous unresolved anger, entitlement, and revenge can become. Graham cannot accept that his victims are moving forward without him. He wants to remain in control, but the people he once intimidated are no longer willing to live in fear.

Darby’s transformation is especially important here. She has gone from being a woman recovering from an abusive marriage to someone who can stand up for herself and protect the life she is building.

Part Four: Healing Truths – Love, Danger, and the Final Mystery

The final part introduces another woman, Traci, who is experiencing abuse from her husband. Unfortunately, her husband’s family is helping hide his actions.

Traci eventually escapes by running away, and Darby discovers her in the middle of the street.

This moment reinforces one of the book’s central themes: sometimes the first step toward healing is having someone recognize that you need help and give you a chance to escape.

Clint is also wanted for questioning by the police, adding another layer of suspense to the story.

As the community prepares for the big Fourth of July cookout at Zane’s house, events take an unexpected turn when Clint is found dead in the lake.

Just when it seems like the danger might be settling down, Darby’s past comes back to haunt her. Her ex-husband returns to town seeking revenge.

At the same time, Brody notices something strange about a man staying in one of the houses nearby. He gets an uncomfortable feeling about the individual, but initially, nobody takes his concerns seriously.

Brody eventually brings his concerns to Zane.

Zane shares the information with Darby, and she remembers having a strange encounter with a man on the lake who waved at her. Something about the interaction had left her feeling uneasy.

The pieces finally begin to come together when Darby goes missing.

Zane remembers what Darby told him about the strange man waving at her on the lake. He also remembers Brody’s description of the suspicious man who was pretending to be a professor.

These seemingly unrelated details become important clues in uncovering what is happening.

The suspense builds as the characters realize that the danger has been closer than they initially thought.

By the end, the truth comes to light, and despite all the abuse, betrayal, fear, and attempts to destroy their happiness, love ultimately wins.

My Overall Book Review

What makes this story so interesting is that it is not just about one person overcoming difficult circumstances. It explores several characters who have experienced abuse, betrayal, loss, and trauma in different ways.

Zane’s story is particularly heartbreaking because his own father intentionally destroyed the future he had worked so hard to achieve. Graham was supposed to be his protector, but instead, he became the person Zane needed protection from.

Darby’s story adds another powerful perspective. She demonstrates that starting over is possible, even after experiencing domestic violence and losing someone you love.

I also enjoyed how the story brought the characters together and allowed their lives to intersect. Their individual experiences created a larger story about community, support, accountability, and finding the courage to move forward.

Five things that stood out to me

  1. Graham’s manipulation: His reputation as a respected surgeon made it easier for him to manipulate others and make Zane look like the villain.
  2. Zane’s strength: Despite everything his father put him through, Zane found a way to rebuild his life and become successful.
  3. Darby’s transformation: She went from surviving an abusive relationship to becoming a strong businesswoman who refused to let her past define her.
  4. The importance of speaking up: Brit’s decision to tell Detective Keller the truth was a turning point in exposing Graham.
  5. Love after trauma: Zane and Darby’s relationship demonstrates that people can find love, happiness, and a new beginning after experiencing unimaginable pain.

Book Club Discussion Questions

These are some questions I would love to discuss with the ladies during our book club meeting!

  1. Did you believe Graham would get away with everything because of his reputation and position in the community?
  2. How did you feel when Graham broke Zane’s arm, knowing that baseball was his dream?
  3. Do you think Eliza was also a victim of Graham’s manipulation, or do you believe she was equally responsible for protecting him?
  4. Was Brit brave for finally telling Detective Keller the truth, or do you think she should have spoken up sooner?
  5. What did you think about Darby’s decision to start over in a new town?
  6. Did you think Zane and Darby were a good match, considering the trauma they both experienced?
  7. What was your reaction when Graham returned from prison and began targeting his family again?
  8. Did you suspect that the strange man pretending to be a professor would become part of the final mystery?
  9. Which character experienced the biggest transformation throughout the story?
  10. What does the ending teach us about love, healing, and second chances?

Final Thoughts: Love Wins!

This story reminds us that appearances can be deceiving. Someone can have a respected career, a beautiful home, and a seemingly perfect family while hiding a completely different reality behind closed doors.

It also reminds us that abuse does not always end when someone escapes the situation. Sometimes the emotional scars remain long after the physical ones have healed.

What I appreciated most was seeing Zane and Darby find ways to rebuild their lives. Neither of them allowed their past to completely determine their future.

There was heartbreak, suspense, unexpected twists, family drama, revenge, and romance. Just when you thought things were finally settling down, another situation pulled you right back into the story.

My biggest takeaway: You cannot change what happened to you, but you can decide what happens next. And sometimes, after everything life puts you through, love really does win.
