Hey friends,

Day 6: After-School Routines That Actually Work

School may end at 3 p.m., but the busy part of the day isn’t necessarily over.

Homework, snacks, activities, chores, dinner, baths, and bedtime can quickly turn the afternoon into chaos.

A simple after-school routine can help.

Step 1: Give Them Time to Decompress

Don’t immediately bombard your child with questions and homework.

Give them a little time to relax.

Try:

“How was your day?”

Then give them some space.

Step 2: Snack & Hydrate

Have an easy snack ready when they get home.

Some ideas include:

  • Fruit
  • Yogurt
  • Cheese and crackers
  • Smoothies
  • Veggies and dip
  • Granola bars
  • Peanut butter toast

And don’t forget water!

Step 3: Homework

Choose a consistent homework time.

Some children work best immediately after their snack, while others need a short break first.

Find what works for your child.

Step 4: Chores

Even school-age children can have age-appropriate responsibilities.

Examples include:

  • Putting away shoes
  • Hanging up their backpack
  • Putting dirty clothes in the hamper
  • Cleaning their room
  • Helping with dishes
  • Taking out small trash cans

Step 5: Family Time

Make time to connect.

It could be:

❤️ Dinner together
🎮 Playing a game
📺 Watching a favorite show
📖 Reading
🚶 Taking a walk

Even 15 minutes can make a difference.

Mom Tip

The goal isn’t to schedule every minute of your child’s afternoon.

Kids need downtime, too.

Create structure without taking away their childhood.
