Hey friends,

Day 4: Helping Kids Prepare Emotionally for the First Day of School

Back-to-school preparation isn’t just about clothes and school supplies.

Kids can experience excitement, nervousness, anxiety, or even sadness when summer ends.

That’s why it’s important to prepare them emotionally, too.

Talk About Their Feelings

Ask questions such as:

  • “Are you excited about going back?”
  • “Is there anything you’re nervous about?”
  • “What are you looking forward to?”
  • “Is there anything you’re worried about?”
  • “What would make your first day easier?”

Then listen.

You don’t always have to fix the problem. Sometimes kids simply need to know that someone hears them.

Talk About What Will Stay the Same

Remind your child about familiar parts of school:

  • Their friends
  • Favorite teachers
  • Favorite subjects
  • Lunch
  • Recess
  • After-school activities

Focusing on familiar things can make something new feel less scary.

Practice Positive Statements

Encourage your child to say:

“I can do hard things.”

“I don’t have to know everything on the first day.”

“I can ask for help.”

“I can make new friends.”

“Mistakes are okay.”

Don’t Dismiss Their Feelings

Instead of saying, “Don’t be nervous,” try:

“It’s okay to feel nervous. New things can feel scary. I’m here for you.”

That simple change can make a huge difference.

Mom Tip

Your child may need extra reassurance during the first few weeks.

Keep checking in even after school has started.

Sometimes the hardest part isn’t the first day; it’s adjusting to the new routine.
