Hey friends,

Day 2: Back-to-School Shopping Without Breaking the Bank

Back-to-school shopping can get expensive quickly. Between school supplies, clothes, shoes, backpacks, lunch supplies, and everything else kids need, the shopping list can feel endless.

Before you start buying everything, take inventory of what you already have.

Shop Your House First

Check closets, drawers, backpacks, and last year’s school supplies.

You may already have:

  • Pencils
  • Pens
  • Notebooks
  • Folders
  • Crayons
  • Markers
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Lunch containers
  • Water bottles
  • Backpacks

There’s no reason to buy something twice!

Make a Shopping List

Separate your list into categories:

School Supplies

  • Pencils
  • Pens
  • Paper
  • Notebooks
  • Folders
  • Binders
  • Highlighters
  • Glue
  • Scissors

Clothing

  • Shirts
  • Pants
  • Jeans
  • Socks
  • Underwear
  • Shoes
  • Jackets

School Extras

  • Backpack
  • Lunchbox
  • Water bottle
  • Hair accessories
  • Personal care items

Let Kids Help

Give your child a budget and let them make some choices.

Maybe they want the superhero backpack, sparkly folders, or their favorite color of notebooks.

Allowing them to choose a few things can make them more excited about returning to school.

Mom Tip

Don’t feel pressured to buy everything at once.

Watch for sales, compare prices, use coupons, and spread purchases out when possible.

Back-to-school doesn’t have to mean back-to-broke!
