Hey Friends,
September has a way of making you realize just how far off track your family routine has gotten. 😂
Summer was fun, but between late nights, relaxed schedules, vacations, activities, and everyone eating at different times, our family routine can definitely use a reset.
And honestly? I’m not looking for perfection.
I’m looking for peace, organization, and a routine that actually works for our family.
So this September, I’m hitting the reset button.
🏡 1. Reset the Family Schedule
The first step is getting everyone back on a predictable schedule.
That means:
- Earlier bedtimes
- Consistent wake-up times
- Homework time
- Family dinner when possible
- Designated downtime
- Limiting those “just one more episode” moments
Having a family calendar where everyone can see what’s happening has also been a lifesaver.
Between school, work, appointments, activities, and everything else, writing things down helps keep the “Wait…we have to be WHERE tonight?” moments to a minimum.
🧺 2. Get the House Back in Order
A September reset isn’t complete without tackling the clutter.
I’m not trying to clean the entire house in one weekend. Instead, I’m focusing on one area at a time.
Start with:
The kitchen: Clean out the refrigerator, organize the pantry, and make room for easy school-night meals.
The kids’ spaces: Go through clothes, school supplies, toys, and anything they’ve outgrown.
The entryway: Create a designated spot for backpacks, shoes, lunch boxes, and school essentials.
A little organization now can save a LOT of frustration later.
🍎 3. Make Weeknight Meals Easier
Let’s be honest—trying to figure out what’s for dinner every single night can be exhausting.
September is the perfect time to create a simple rotation of family favorites.
Think:
- Taco Tuesday
- Slow-cooker Wednesday
- Pasta night
- Breakfast for dinner
- Pizza or takeout night
I’m also trying to keep a few easy meals and snacks available for those nights when everybody is hungry and I have absolutely no desire to cook.
Sometimes the goal isn’t a Pinterest-worthy dinner.
Sometimes the goal is simply feeding everybody without losing your mind.
📚 4. Revisit School Routines
The beginning of the school year can be exciting, but it can also be overwhelming.
September is a great time to check in with the kids.
Ask questions like:
“How are you feeling about school?”
“What’s your favorite part of your day?”
“Is anything stressing you out?”
“Is there anything you need help with?”
Sometimes our kids won’t tell us something is bothering them unless we create the space for them to talk.
And that doesn’t always have to happen during a serious conversation. A car ride, bedtime chat, or dinner conversation can be the perfect opportunity.
💰 5. Reset the Family Budget
Summer spending can sneak up on you.
Between activities, eating out, vacations, shopping, and those random purchases that seemed like a good idea at the time, September is a great month to check the budget.
I’m taking a look at:
- Monthly bills
- Grocery spending
- Subscriptions
- School expenses
- Upcoming birthdays and holidays
- Entertainment spending
- Savings goals
A financial reset doesn’t have to mean cutting out everything fun.
It simply means knowing where your money is going.
❤️ 6. Reset Our Family Time
One thing I don’t want to get lost in the busyness of the school year is family time.
It doesn’t have to be an elaborate weekend adventure.
It could be:
🍿 Family movie night
🍕 Pizza night
🎲 Playing a board game
🚗 Taking a Saturday drive
🍦 Getting ice cream
📖 Reading together
☕ Having a Sunday morning breakfast
It’s easy to say, “We’ll do something next weekend.”
Then suddenly the month is over.
So I’m making family time intentional.
🧘🏾♀️ 7. And Yes, Mom Needs a Reset Too
This might be the most important part.
As moms, we spend so much time making sure everyone else is ready, organized, fed, and where they’re supposed to be that we sometimes forget about ourselves.
My September reset also includes me.
That might mean:
- Getting back to a skincare routine
- Taking a quiet morning walk
- Reading a few pages of a book
- Enjoying my coffee without rushing
- Planning a girls’ night
- Spending time on my hobbies
- Saying no when my schedule is already full
Taking care of myself isn’t selfish.
A calmer mom can create a calmer home.
🌱 September Is About Progress, Not Perfection
I’m reminding myself that getting our family back on track doesn’t mean everything has to be perfect.
There will still be messy rooms.
Someone will forget their homework.
Dinner will occasionally come from the drive-thru.
Someone will stay up too late.
And there will probably be mornings when we’re rushing out the door looking for a missing shoe. 😂
That’s life.
The goal isn’t to create a perfect family routine.
The goal is to create a routine that gives our family a little more structure, connection, and breathing room.
So here’s to September.
A fresh month.
A fresh routine.
A fresh start.
And hopefully, a little more organization and a lot more peace.
Mama, if your family needs a reset too, you’re not behind. You just need a fresh start. ❤️
✨ September Reset Challenge
This month, pick one area of your family life to reset each week.
Week 1: Family schedule
Week 2: Home organization
Week 3: Meals & grocery budget
Week 4: Family time & self-care
Don’t try to change everything at once.
Start small.
Make it manageable.
And give yourself plenty of grace along the way.
