Hey friends,
It’s that time of year again! New backpacks, fresh school supplies, new shoes, busy schedule, and somehow, Mom is expected to remember ALL of it. 😂
Back-to-school season can be exciting, but let’s be honest: it can also feel overwhelming. Between school shopping, registration forms, appointments, meal planning, transportation, homework routines, and getting everyone back on a schedule, Mom has a lot on her plate.
So, this year, I’m making back-to-school season about Mom too!
🛍️ 1. Don’t Forget Mom Needs School Shopping Too
We spend so much time making sure the kids have everything they need that we sometimes forget about ourselves.
Before the school year starts, take a little time to check your own essentials:
- 👟 Comfortable shoes
- 👚 A few new outfits
- 👜 A work or everyday bag
- ☕ Your favorite coffee tumbler
- 🧴 Self-care essentials
- 📝 A planner or calendar
- 🎧 Headphones for those moments when you need some peace and quiet!
You don’t need a whole new wardrobe. Even one or two things that make you feel good can give you that “new school year, new me” feeling.
📅 2. Get the Family Calendar Together
Once school starts, the calendar can get CRAZY.
Between school events, sports, appointments, work, birthdays, meetings, and family activities, it’s easy to forget something.
Create one family calendar and put everything in one place.
Try color-coding it:
💙 School
💚 Sports & Activities
💗 Mom
💛 Appointments
❤️ Family Events
And don’t forget to add your own plans.
Mom’s activities belong on the calendar too!
🍎 3. Make Mornings Easier
One of the biggest back-to-school struggles is getting everyone out the door on time.
Start preparing the night before.
Set out:
✔️ Clothes
✔️ Shoes
✔️ Backpack
✔️ Lunch
✔️ Water bottle
✔️ Homework
✔️ Anything needed for the next day
And if your kids are old enough, let them help.
They can pack their backpacks, choose their clothes, prepare simple snacks, and check their school schedule.
The goal isn’t to make Mom do everything.
The goal is to teach the kids to help Mom!
🥪 4. Create an Easy Lunch Rotation
You don’t need to create Pinterest-worthy lunches every morning.
Keep it simple!
Create a list of easy lunch combinations that your kids actually eat.
For example:
Monday: Sandwich + fruit + chips
Tuesday: Chicken nuggets + fruit + veggie
Wednesday: Wrap + yogurt + snack
Thursday: Pizza bites + fruit
Friday: Leftovers or lunch money
Having a few go-to meals can save you from standing in the kitchen at 6:30 a.m. wondering what you’re going to pack.
☕ 5. Mom Needs a Morning Routine Too
Your morning shouldn’t begin with everyone else’s needs.
Even if you only have 15 minutes, give yourself a little time.
Try:
☕ Drink your coffee
🧘🏽♀️ Take a few deep breaths
📖 Read something inspirational
🎶 Play your favorite playlist
🧴 Do a quick skincare routine
🙏🏽 Pray or meditate
📝 Look over your schedule
Even a few quiet minutes can help you start your day feeling more prepared.
🧹 6. Don’t Try to Keep the House Perfect
School is starting.
Life is busy.
The house may get messy.
And that’s okay!
There will be backpacks on the floor, shoes by the door, dishes in the sink, and laundry waiting to be folded.
You don’t have to keep everything perfect.
Focus on what actually needs to get done.
Done is better than perfect.
💕 7. Check In With Your Kids
Back-to-school isn’t only about supplies and schedules.
It’s also about emotions.
Ask your kids:
- “How are you feeling about going back?”
- “What are you excited about?”
- “Is there anything you’re nervous about?”
- “What do you want me to know?”
- “How can I support you this year?”
Sometimes kids don’t need Mom to fix everything.
Sometimes they just need Mom to listen.
💰 8. Don’t Let Back-to-School Spending Stress You Out
Back-to-school shopping can get expensive FAST.
Before buying everything on the list, check what you already have.
You may already have:
📓 Notebooks
✏️ Pencils
🖍️ Crayons
🎨 Art supplies
🎒 Backpacks
📁 Folders
Make a shopping list and stick to it.
And remember: your child doesn’t need the most expensive backpack, shoes, or supplies to have a successful school year.
🍷 9. Schedule Mom Time
This one is important.
Don’t wait until you’re completely exhausted to take a break.
Schedule something just for you.
Maybe it’s:
🍷 A girls’ night
📚 Book club
☕ Coffee with a friend
🛍️ A little shopping trip
🎬 Movie night
🧖🏽♀️ Spa day
🚶🏽♀️ A peaceful walk
🏡 A quiet evening at home
Mom time isn’t selfish.
Mom time helps Mom recharge.
🎯 10. Set Your Own Goals for the New School Year
The kids aren’t the only ones who can have goals.
Think about what YOU want this school year.
Maybe you want to:
✨ Start a new hobby
✨ Read more books
✨ Spend more time with friends
✨ Grow your blog
✨ Start exercising
✨ Save money
✨ Travel somewhere new
✨ Practice more self-care
✨ Learn something new
Write your goals down and check in with yourself throughout the year.
❤️ A Back-to-School Reminder for Mom
As you prepare everyone else for another school year, remember to prepare yourself too.
You don’t have to have everything figured out.
You don’t have to be the perfect mom.
You don’t have to make every morning Pinterest-perfect.
You just have to show up, do your best, and give yourself some grace along the way.
This school year, let’s make a promise:
We will take care of our kids—but we will take care of ourselves too.
Here’s to new routines, new memories, new beginnings, and hopefully a little more sleep! 😂
🎒 Happy Back-to-School, Moms!
