Hey Friends,
There’s a certain kind of mess that comes with motherhood, the kind that no one really prepares you for. It’s not just the toys scattered across the floor or the dishes stacked in the sink. It’s the noise, the constant movement, the half-finished tasks, the feeling of being needed every second of the day. It’s beautiful, but it’s also overwhelming. And some days, it feels like joy gets buried under all of it.
I used to think joy would come when everything was finally in order. When the house was clean, the kids were calm, and the to-do list was done. But motherhood doesn’t really work like that. There’s always something else to grab, another mess to clean, another moment calling for your attention.
What I’m slowly learning is this: joy isn’t waiting on the other side of the mess. It lives right in the middle of it.
It’s in the giggles coming from the next room, even if it means something probably got into something it shouldn’t have.
It’s in the sticky hugs and the bedtime “just one more story.”
It’s in the way your child reaches for you first, even when you feel like you have nothing left to give.
The mess isn’t separate from the joy; it’s often proof of it.
- A lived-in home means memories are being made.
- A loud house means life is happening.
- A tired mom usually means a day spent loving her people well.
That doesn’t mean you have to love every moment. You don’t have to pretend the hard parts aren’t hard. It’s okay to feel overwhelmed, to crave quiet, to wish for just a little space.
But maybe, in the middle of wiping counters and breaking up sibling arguments, you can pause for just a second and notice something small. A laugh. A smile. A moment that won’t come back the same way again.
Joy doesn’t have to be big to be real.
So if today feels messy in every sense of the word, take a deep breath and look a little closer. You might just find that joy has been there all along, tucked into the middle of it all.
And that messy, beautiful life you’re living?
It’s fuller than you think.
Just a mom, learning to see it.
