Libby Day was seven when her mother and two sisters were murdered in “The Satan Sacrifice” of Kinnakee, Kansas. She survived—and famously testified that her fifteen-year-old brother, Ben, was the killer. Twenty-five years later, the Kill Club—a secret secret society obsessed with notorious crimes—locates Libby and pumps her for details. They hope to discover proof that may free Ben. Libby hopes to turn a profit off her tragic history: She’ll reconnect with the players from that night and report her findings to the club—for a fee. As Libby’s search takes her from shabby Missouri strip clubs to abandoned Oklahoma tourist towns, the unimaginable truth emerges, and Libby finds herself right back where she started—on the run from a killer.

Bernice Groves

Author of Evanescence: A Fairytale and blogger of Peaks Journal

My special guest for the month of November is one of my good friends. Bernice just publish her first book this year and is a very talent young lady with big dreams and goals. Here are some of the things that I ask her about what made her start writing? Where she got her inspiration from and so much more:

  1. What made you start writing? I started writing when I was twelve. As a child, I loved to read, and imagine crazy worlds where I’d be the main character. Eventually, that turned into a love of writing.
  2. Where did you get your expression for writing from? I’ve read a lot. Writers aren’t lying when they tell you to read as much as you can. But don’t just read, you need to pay attention to how the writer weaved the story together. From there, I just sort of weaved my own stories.
  3. What were the early influences on your writing and how do they manifest in your work? My earliest influences were books, my mom, and my teachers. There are several books that I read as child, that I still remember, and reflect on to this day – The Giver, by Lois Lowry; East, by Edith Pattou, and so, so many more. My mom used to write, and had her own publishing company. So I’d say she was a pretty big influence. My teachers encouraged me a lot too.
  4. How does writing change the writer? Often, you’ll hear writers talk about how amazing it is. I agree, but writing also takes a huge toll on me. It’s a huge undertaking, and a big commitment. Writing has made me more patient, and analytical, I think. I notice lots of small details about things most would ignore.
  5. What books have fortified you as a writer? Way too many to list! A few are The Giver, East, Wuthering Heights, One Thousand and One Nights, and River God. These aren’t listed in order.
  6. Are you working on something new?
Yes! It’s an exciting new work. Although I self-published Evanescence: A Fairytale, I view this piece as my debut piece, because it’s my most current work. I don’t want to say much about it, except that all of my work has to be meaningful.
