I once heard from an old Italian lady that the original idea was for women to be the ones who gave to men, on Valentine’s Day. Rumour has it that Valentino’s sweetheart jilted him for another man. Word got out that he was dying of a broken heart, so women from all over the country sent him flowers and other gifts saying, “I’ll be yours, Valentino.” Hence the phrase “Be my Valentine.” I’m not sure how true this little tale is, but she was adamant about the story and told it with such passion! Ha ha!
